With 20 million albums sold in the world, the singer is on top of the world. Now the new album is due to be released, but he is very calm: "We worked very hard and I am satisfied" It seems ironical, but the title of Andrea Bocelli’s new album, Sogno, does not seem to fit his extraordinary success. Not because the singer from Laiatico, Pisa, who just recently turned 40, only fantasized of the 20 million albums sold by the time he performed at the Oscars, but because for him it doesn’t seem to have happened that way. More than a dream, when Andrea Bocelli, is working on a project, it is the fruit of hard work and the sheer happiness of the results when a group of talented people work together.

..What work is there behind Sogno?
"There is a huge amount of work, like always. Every one of my albums uses a real symphony orchestra, for which it is necessary to write the parts and also the electronic sounds. It is not easy to blend one with the other.

..It is an album full of prestigious collaboration, from the duets with Celine Dion and Eros Ramazzotti, to the songs, two of them, composed by Ennio Morricone. What is to be expected of Sogno?
I am very pleased with what we have done, mostly because we put all the right ingredients. My philosophy of life, is to not make plans other than the next 24 hours. There are no rules about what the public likes. I hope that people realize how much work we did. We gave everything we had.

..In your plans, however, you will look further than 24 hours, or not?
With the people that work with me we discuss hundreds of projects every day. Only a few of them are successful. However, when I started, I did not have specific projects. My point of take off was a fascination that a world of sounds would resurrect in me.

..When did the surprise (realization) happen?
I did not have the minimal idea of what success could be, it was great luck. I was leading a country life, I would have died of fright. Fortunately, I had one year to get used to it, at the beginning of the career, where I started to get used to certain things. It’s not that I am complaining, but, work, when it’s there, it is a blessing. And then, what is there more important and beautiful than leaving a trace of your yourself in this world.

..It is odd that all this extraordinary success started with Con te Partiro, a song that in Sanremo ’95 was not well received.
But I knew, I even told my record label company. Con te Partiro was a marathon, it could not succeed in Sanremo, that is a one hundred meter sprint. Even today, after five years from it’s release, it is still a great hit, it continues to sell albums. There is nothing phony about it, it has no tricks. Songs like this are born five or six in a century.

..Is there a difference in the way your songs are received in the different cities of the world?
I really don’t think so, the public is similar in the whole world. Most of all mine. In my concerts I sing operatic works, music that does not need to be explained. But with the lovers of lyrics there are other listeners that came to know me through my songs or maybe curiosity: one or the other the public is the same throughout the world.

..The public mixes, but you do not mix, how would you explain that?
Classical music cannot be mixed with songs. On one hand I record albums of songs, on the other I lead an artistic life founded on lyrics. My heart beats with opera, and those records that I sang as a child looking to imitate the famous tenors, being the bonsai tenor. Light music for me was a profitable experience, that I don’t deny: I did not plan it, but things go according to God’s will.

..Will you sing again in a theatre?
I will do Werther in New York, and soon Boheme will be released. It was recorded with The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Zubin Mehta, then I will participate in the Merry Widow at the Arena di Verona. This is just for 1999.

..How did the opera world receive it after the initial suspicion?
The critics care mostly of those devoted to the works. Then there were even critics that were fair and comprehensible, this has helped me accomplish a lesson of conscience. But this seems to me a problem that I have overcome: they are amazed that one who goes to Sanremo even sings opera. But you must remember that everyone, even Caruso, sang songs.

...In Sogno, you put in a poem written a few years ago (A Mio Padre), where you are talking to your father about your future. Now that you are a father of two, in what spirit did you reinterpret this poem?
It is a poem that I wrote at a delicate time in my life, when I could not get any results, and my parents were preoccupied. But I wasn’t happy with the accompaniment. So I stripped it of the music and I put it in this album. In my family, love and affection were always very firm. As a father, I tend to recreate for my children the climate in which I was brought up, always remembering two principles that I believe. Optimism and trust of our fellow man. Those who do not trust others receive in exchange only suspicion.
